Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann is reportedly certain to join Barcelona in the summer following a private agreement between the two clubs.
Sport’s Albert Roge (h/t Stuart Ballard of the Express) tweeted: “It is closed, yes, although obviously neither of the two parties will confirm it. At Sport we have already been informed of the private agreement that exists between both, and Griezmann will be Barca’s in the summer 100 per cent.”
As noted by Ballard, the Frenchman was linked with a move to Manchester United last summer before remaining at Atletico.
The Red Devils have since recruited Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku, which makes another attacker less of a priority this summer, and it seems Barca will be the beneficiaries.
Griezmann bagged an impressive hat-trick in Atleti’s 5-2 thrashing of Sevilla on Sunday, as well as providing a backheel assist for Koke. Football writer Ryan Baldi was impressed:
The forward’s form left much to be desired in the first half of the season, but he has been productive in front of goal following the slow start, per OptaJose:
He’s a prolific goalscorer, having hit 25 or more in each of his three complete campaigns with Los Rojiblancos, and he bagged 20 in his final year at Real Sociedad.
His excellent goal record isn’t the only reason he’s highly coveted. The Guardian’s Sid Lowe singled out his work ethic for praise:
Given the work he puts in every week in conjunction with his exceptional quality, his reported £100 million buyout clause in the summer would seem to be a relatively modest price to pay in today’s market.
His arrival at the Camp Nou could create some selection headaches following the purchases of Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho, though the former is still only 20 and the latter can be deployed in midfield.
